Same for Fallout New Vegas. I must complete a combat-based no death run on very hard difficulty and in hardcore mode before I die.
I had to stop playing Metroid Prime because of that. It had too much backtracking which was extremely annoying. The stupid thing is it had remarkably good mechanics for its time. I wish they would have made it into a linear game with a good story. What a waste.

I have some sort of issue where every game I play turns into work. Every single one. Because obviously you want to not waste time so you have to be optimal, to be optimal you have to do research, know various techniques, practice, etc. Each game becomes a job.

looool I'm the exact same way. I will play a game for about 10-20 hours restarting and researching and "getting a feel" for the min-max'ing aspect and by then I'm already bored of it.

Play action rpgs, they have deep mechanics but they are usually fun and intuitive, you can spend hours and never feel bored, and there's usually a ton of replayability with mods, etc.
I'd say start off with torchlight 2, then play it again using the synergies mod.
I do understand the whole games feel like work thing though, its because the cope is losing its effect, because your mind can no longer lie to itself, you know full well while you're leveling up or scoring points in game your quality of life our here in reality is complete shit and getting worse. Games are an escape, but the escape loses its effect as time goes on, especially when you take the black pill, games aren't as fun as they used to be for me now because of that.

Diablo and its clones are jobs.
The only games I've ever really had fun playing were "diablo clones". Most other games just seem to "simple" for me to bother play. I like the fact that based on your choices and build strategy you can makes yourself completely OP cleaning rooms of enemies effortlessly, or you can make a shitty build that has to struggle with groups.
Action rpgs are games where you have the most choice in relation to your character.
For example right now I'm playing Grim Dawn with the grimarillion mod
Class Build Core Traits:
Minimum 100% Damage Reflection - To nullify health steal attacks, if an enemy hits you with 100 hp steal, they basically hit themselves with it too, so you don't lose any health. Its also good for basically making enemies hurt themselves
% Health Damage - I put points into multiple kills that do damage based on a percentage of an enemies current health, usually within the rage of 10 to 20 percent. The skill maxed out spreads to 4 other enemies, so whenever I get hit, 5 enemies on screen lose at minimum 10% of their current health. Key word is "current". If an enemy has 100 hp and they lose 10% they'll have 90hp now, if they get hit with it again they'll lose 10% of 90 (current health) and not 10% of 100 (max health)
Passive Damage Aura - Passive damage aura with minimum radius of 3 meters, to just fuck with melee ranged enemies
HP Regen - Self explanatory
I can basically just walk into large groups and watch them kill themselves being near me or by hitting me JFL.
This is the most OP build I've ever been able to put together in any game, shit like this is not possible outside of action rpgs, its usually just boring cliche game mechanics with the illusion of control.
Diablo clones are life fuel, Diablo 3 is absolute trash
