Key findings:
• Strongest predictor: Right-wing authoritarianism — massive positive link to both hostile sexism (β ≈ 0.61) and misogyny (β ≈ 0.56), explaining 29–35% unique variance.
• Attractiveness: Strong convex curvilinear relationship — highest hostility at extremes (very attractive and very unattractive self-ratings); lowest at average.
• Sexual partners: Moderate concave curvilinear — moderate numbers linked to slightly higher hostility.
• Other results: Rejection sensitivity weakly predicted misogyny; gaming addiction weakly predicted misogyny. No support for loneliness, romantic partners, or gaming hours as predictors in adjusted models.
• Models explained ~39–41% variance overall.
Conclusions: RWA and extreme self-perceived attractiveness are key drivers of hostility towards women even in general men, not just incels. Incel-specific factors like loneliness/rejection don’t generalize strongly.
Limitations: Cross-sectional (no causality), self-report bias, UK-only sample, no incel identifiers, potential unmeasured confounders.
Straight-up: The “very attractive and very unattractive men show highest hostility” headline comes from the attractiveness curvilinear effect. RWA dominates as the ideological driver.
