How do you get the picture the size you want then? Digital zoom or crop the image after? Both add distortion. How far are you even talking about?

When I think far I think 20 feet but you could only mean 5 feet.

You can go as far as you want, but you simply lose detail. The main point is to not be too close. At minimum full arm length away from your face. There's a reason selfie stick exists.
With mirrors it probably works a bit different I imagine.

Everything matters. It's as saying that only your face is all that matters. Or eye area or bottom third. In reality it's face, frame, height, money and everything else. Same here honestly, everything matters just got to work with what you have and what's available.
