Nobody is foolish enough to directly challenge the US who can easily crush any foreign threat with superior nuclear or conventional might. They need to be drawn in when it's already too late, and there are too many fires to put out.

China isn't stupid enough to take on the US first. The US is hoping for this to happen, though. At this stage, the best that China can do is repel US attacks, but a war with the US would be drawn out, expensive endeavor for both countries.
