The Second World War was a continuation of the First World War and a consequence of the collapse of the Habsburg and Hohenzollern empires. It turns out that a lot of territories and peoples that were previously united by a single royal family have nothing in common. After the First World War, the Greeks and Turks exchanged populations, and this may have been a good outcome, as the Turks would have massacred the Greeks regardless.Unfortunate, but frankly, at that point it probably had to happen. Germans have lived in those places for centuries

and yet, how many of them have joined the various resistance movements against German occupation? And conversely, how many took advantage of the occupation by getting cushy jobs for which they were now favored? Unironically the behavior of the German minorities in Nazi-occupied Europe might be one of the best proofs that multiculturalism simply doesn't work ever recorded. A genetically close population to the people living where they were resettled, basically indistinguishable visually, lived side-by-side for centuries, intermarrying, learning each other's languages and customs, by all means they should've been completely assimilated and consider themselves to be citizens of those countries first and foremost... but then, their co-ethnics attacked, and all of that turned out to have been meaningless. If they weren't kicked out of those countries, they would've just been seen as a permanent 5th column anyway, and who knows what that would've lead to.
The Germans were the imperial people of the Holy Roman Empire, the Austrian Empire, and Austria-Hungary, so the ruling elite settled them in different territories to control them. Russia did the same, and even the USSR tried to deliberately populate the Baltic countries with Russians to keep them under occupation.Unfortunate, but frankly, at that point it probably had to happen.
