These numbers are from a study published in 2019 in the Journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science. According to the researchers, between 23 and 33 percent of the women surveyed had deliberately misrepresented their romantic interest in a man in order to dine at his expense.

Despite women generally rating foodie calls as unacceptable, approximately 23% of women had engaged in a foodie call in Study 1, whereas 33% reported engaging in a foodie call in Study 2.

We predicted thatfoodie calls may be most prevalent among women who scoredhigh in the dark triad as well as those who espoused more tradi-tional gender roles.

Scoring high on the Dark Triad traits means displaying these traits more intensely:

1. Machiavellianism: They manipulate and deceive others for their own benefit.
2. Psychopathy: They lack empathy for the plight of others and feel no remorse for their own harmful actions.
3. Narcissism: They have an inflated sense of their own importance and entitlement. In addition, although they are socially skilled, they have little interest in building deep relationships with others.
