While there is no library greater than that of the PS2 and I owe my childhood to it, most people can’t seem to recall just how fucking shit the console itself was, because we weren’t particularly self-aware of it at the time.
Here is what I can remember now: every major game being a massive technical pain in the rectum to pick up & play by today’s standards.
• Many games forcing you to play with inverted X & Y axes with no options given to revert them, which could easily throw you off.
• Dynamic blurs and unnecessary filters that are nauseating and cannot be turned off.
• Games being slideshows, particularly with the more demanding ones like SoTC where you feel like you’re lucky for getting single digits of FPS.
• The disc laser/lens calling it quits half way through heated sessions and inducing rage and frustration. The laser in general was a piece of shit.
• Issues regarding save datas, requiring original memory cards that are either too hard or impossible to come by.
• The analog stick being a stiff and unreliable price of shit with every shooter being an uncalibrated mess with deemphasized aiming controls, though you could still circumvent it via PADEMU on OPL.
• An absolute fuck load of garbage movie tie-in games that nobody cared about.
• Don’t even get me started with the homebrew. If your laser’s fucked then say hello to every game you boot up through Freemcboot having FMV stutters, crashes, and unbearable frame drops every five seconds.
All in all, it wasn’t that good. Stop thinking that this was our greatest generation. The games were magnificent, but that honor rightfully belongs to the PS360wii era.
Free online being more accessible than ever. Valve was still making games. Controllers could finally go toe to toe with mouse & keyboard. Innovation was through the roof. Games were as masculine as ever. Super Mario Galaxy was released.
This is where it all peaked, bros. We really didn’t know how good we had it before Anita Sarkeesian was conjured by a hagraven.
