In Babylon, punishment relied on a sort of "eye to eye" system of persecution, in which, for example, if a man murdered someone's son, the murderer's son would be killed, as opposed to the murderer himself. A similar system existed with lying/defamation, in which, in serious cases, spreading a lie about someone would result in the defaming action being used against the defamer.
