The only reason why it's glorified is so the state can convince a bunch of stupid 18-year-olds to volunteer for a yearslong vacation in a shithole for shit pay. If it wasn't, all volunteer forces would have to pay a lot more to meet recruitment quotas.
I don't mind it; it's how the taxpayers get their money's worth.
