In the 80s all the industry and farming declined and the economy became very dependent on tourism. So it's difficult to find jobs in industry unlike the other European countries, almost every job is in the services sector.

It doesn't help either that most of the population are retired (pensions) or public servants so the taxes have to be so high to maintain those two groups. The euro also fucked up things because it made payments in the EU easier but prices increased too.
