He has a job and he needs to work to pay bills (obviously he's also killing people but she doesn't know that) so what if he's gone for a while?! If he WAS around all the time then he wouldn't be able to pay for the house or anything at all

The writers of that show are retards though, they didn't take the opportunity to do something truly interesting like having Dexter kill Rita (cause she's a cheating whore wife that deserved to die) and using his blood splatter knowledge to frame the Trinity killer (and kill him too so he can't rat Dexter out).
