I've heard him being mentioned several times but it was not until now where I specifically learned what he did.

tldr; he was a university professor that believed that technology would destroy the world and so he sent packaged mail bombs to several different people in the span of 18 years to spread his ideology. he killed 3 people and injured 23 others with his mail packages. because he would often try hard to make sure there is no trace of him when sending the packages it took him around 18 years before finally being caught.

personally I think he was too schizo and doesnt realize how much easier technology made our lives despite it having alot of side consequences. and despite being anti-leftist his ideology wouldn't really fit in either spectrums

The trouble is dramatic reformation of at the end of the day requires real hard power which why I sort of half believe Cypher from the Matrix was right. Technology isn’t necessarily the problem, but the isolation, lack of community, lack of influence over one’s own society, and how much modern life resembles a warped kind of serfdom 2.0 for most people are all deeply disturbing. Beyond that I really wonder whether birth control has done tremendous damage to western society long term. That’s the thing with people, most will always choose what is easiest and most convenient in the near term not really weighing long term satisfaction as much as we should.

I don’t know that technology itself is the issue more the actual structuring of our societies. Even though the Amish are backwards in many ways you could say I guarantee you they are a very happy people with much lower rates of mental illness compared with most city folk for example. Turns out modern convenience like a smart phone does not actually make you happy despite boomers constantly claiming as such.

At the end of the day wholistic happiness and contentment requires several things:
1) To live (eat sleep shelter)
2) to love and be loved
3) sex
4) variety
5) to be important
6) possibly dealing with the fear of death (I’m not religious myself but that’s one role it has in communities as well as helping to provide unified values).

There’s a book by Hyrum Smith about this I read a long time ago. The reason everyone is fucking miserable today is because most people have deep unmet needs and are powerless to meet them. Since changing society is impossible without overwhelming hard force we just pump people full of drugs to get them through the day. Despite all our technological advancement there’s a real argument to be made that people are more unhappy now on average than we were living in primitive Hunter gatherer tribes.

Technology is just one necessary component of progress. Without technology there would be no science and vice versa. It's a part of civilization. Does he want us to go back to nature and live like humans did more than 10 thousand years ago? If he dislikes the industrial revolution specificially. Well it was just a necessary succession of the previous scientific and technological progress, so where do you draw the line other than at the absolute beginning of civilization. Or you could argue that even primitive weapons and tools are "technology", so we would have to de-evolve even further. Sending little bombs to some scientists is incredibly immature if you look at the big picture imo

I wonder sometimes if the current regime can be defeated realistically because they are so good about propagandizing their populations. They’re really really good at it and basically raise men to accept life as serfs who have little and support women without even having one of their own.
