Only Putin himself and his most trusted confidants (if they exist KEK) know the true reasons behind the Ukrainian invasion. We have the official version of NATO's imperialism using Ukrainian territory to creep on Russia, and this very well could be the true reason, but the picture of history is never perfectly clear. The best we can do is infer the real reasons.
Easy for you to say that, you can just sit back and zoobserve from a distance. But empire is and always was harmful for russians. This competition takes place at a great expense of russians, just like the competition between the USSR and the west. Where westerners won social benefits because their elites were scared of communist indoctrination of their people (if you believe that was the case, because I'm not sure).

Taxes are highest in Scandinavia. Also Russia has other benefits. Like if you failed to find a job in Rostov, you can went to Moscow. If you fail in Moscow, you can went to Nizhny Novgorod and then to Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk etc. It's a huge social mobility.
In a small country of a few millions, you're literally locked in your small chamber and it's not so easy to just move to the West because you need to know language good if you're from another EU country and not a rapefugee...
