That's just civil rights propaganda. They lynched everybody back then, especially along the frontiers. Lynching occurred because there was no established judicial system, such as in the Wild West, or the pace of justice was deemed too slow, inefficient or not swift enough. Blacks were lynched more frequently because they committed a disproportionate amount of crime, just as they do today, but lynching itself wasn't exactly racist.

They did that to whites too, though not as often as they did it to blacks.

It's just a remnant of the wild west. Vigilante justice, compounded by racial animus that was exacerbated by the Reconstruction period and the south losing the war in general.

Mob violence is common everywhere where lawlessness is the norm. Nowadays is occurs mostly in places like the Middle East or in Africa, because of the political instabilities of those countries.
