It does look boring as hell, but it was written/directed by Darren Aronofsky, who is a really good filmmaker. If you haven't seen his other movies I'd check them out first - Black Swan, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream, Pi. Then maybe watch Noah, and Mother, and then the Fountain, and then if you really want to watch The Whale then maybe give it a try.

The first scene is the protagonist aggressively cranking his dick to gay porn and then going into cardiac arrest. JFL. The orchestral music at every corner of the protagonist's mundane life pisses me off too, clearly the movie thinks it's smarter than it actually is. Slap an A24 logo on anything and normies will worship it because it makes them feel smart.
