The males are the lowest rung. They get the least amount of food, often scraps and stray bones, and are often seen underweight and injured. Males in general also live years less than their female counterparts.
They’re frequently attacked by the larger, more dominant female hyenas, as early as birth they are attacked by their female siblings as they establish dominance over them.
At sexual maturity, the males leave their birth clan to find a new clan in hopes to be able to reproduce. When the male finds a new clan, it is tortured by all the females until they finally get used to him and can tolerate his presence, but the attacks and aggression never truly stop.
If he’s lucky, he may get to pump and dump a female for a few seconds. Life never improves though, absolutely brutal.
