The total number of recorded abortions in the USSR from 1954 to 1990 was approximately 259 million, and from 1954 to 1991, it exceeded 264 million.

Do they say why so many?

Do they say why so many?
"In the 1970s and 1980s, about 7 million abortions were performed annually in the USSR. In terms of the number of abortions per 100 live births, the USSR surpassed the United States and other developed capitalist countries. However, the birth rate in the USSR was significantly higher than in developed countries. Therefore, the main reason for the high abortion rate (per 100 live births) in the USSR was the low effectiveness of contraception compared to Western countries, particularly in the southern republics and rural areas. "In many cases, unwanted pregnancies occurred due to ineffective use of contraceptive methods..." [120]. The contraceptive revolution only occurred in post-Soviet Russia, with a significant delay compared to Western countries [120].

Other reasons for the USSR's leadership among developed countries in terms of the number of abortions include the high level of alcohol consumption among the population (mainly men) and conflicts within families due to this, as well as housing and financial issues in young families."©

In total, 258.7 million abortions were recorded in the USSR between 1954 and 1990. In fact, there were much more, as the table does not include data on successful abortions performed outside hospitals. In the 1960s and until 1978, the USSR had a higher abortion rate than the world's most populous country, China. In Japan, the annual number of recorded abortions exceeded 1 million from 1953 to 1961, and by 1990, it had decreased to 457,000. In the United States, the number of abortions exceeded 1 million per year only in 1975, and from 1975 to 1990, the number of abortions remained between 1 million and 1.6 million per year. In India, abortion was banned until 1971, and the number of abortions was negligible compared to the number of abortions in the USSR and China. The USSR had more abortions than Maoist China, despite the fact that the population of the People's Republic of China was twice as large as the population of the USSR.

Makes sense.
I was surprised by this myself, as I had heard about the prevalence of abortions in the USSR after Stalin's death, but I had never studied the numbers. As a result, the USSR lost 200+ million potential children in less than half a century. This is significantly more than the number of human losses lost during World War II.

Who would want to grow up in the USSR though?

Le based russia for you

it likely is the country with the most legal abortions as they were the first to legalize abortion, although abortions were banned again under Stalin then decriminalized again by his "successors".
hard to say if it was the country with the most abortions though, since we can't exactly get proper statistics on all illegal abortions.

How does that compare to modern day Russia?

There are quite a few abortions now. According to statistics, there were 338,367 cases of induced abortion in Russia in 2024. However, it seems ironic to me that most of today's Russian authorities constantly talk about demographics and low birth rates, but in reality, they have lost at least 100 million people. I have added an additional 150 million, as this includes the South Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as cases where abortions were performed due to the risk of having a sick child. Today's Russian ruling class came from the USSR and the Soviet party elite and the KGB, and they constantly use Soviet nostalgia, but for some reason they keep silent about the huge number of abortions.

258 million abortions in the USSR between 1954 and 1990 is crazy. This wasn’t women’s liberation or healthcare only while they also played a role, it was also a demographic genocide. And it didn’t stop in the USSR cause the same ideological rot infected Japan, the United States, and Europe. Legalized abortion, feminism, population control all packaged as freedom, but engineered to dismantle nations from within.
Marxist honey land

But 258 million is a big number, it's literally the population of Brazil.

Even with all of these abortions it had population grow unlike modern RF which only supports current population quantity due to immigrants and the birth rate in kavkaz due to dotations.
