With stuff you have seen with Collective Shout lobbying payment processors to not allow payments of "misogynistic" and "obscene" content leading to services like Steam pull many games from their libraries despite being legal.
The "Online Safety Act" in the UK mandating all online services to force age verification on their users and remove content deemed "harmful" to children. You think it would stop there? Well, you are sorely mistaken.
The EU has introduced chat control, a bill which mandates that the contents of everyone's messages would be scanned for CSAM through a method called Client-side scanning where the message contents are seen on the device level before being encrypted and sent, fixing the issue of not breaking encryption, however this opens the doors to much greater censorship because it's basically having spyware on your device that reads and scans EVERYTHING YOU UPLOAD.
EU countries like France, Germany and Denmark are also considering age verification systems and are giving websites a grace period till about mid-2026 to implement them.
Think the US is safe? Well, there's KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) and SCREEN (Shielding Children’s Retinas from Egregious Exposure on the Net Act) both of which are currently in Congress in discussion after a couple of failed attempts before, and certain States like Florida already force AV albeit in a quite bad way though.
Australia is probably the most fucked, their laws are so Draconian and controlling it's worse than the UK's because it's just a blanket ban and forcing AV on literally everything even down to fucking Search Engines like Google coming into effect at the end of this year. They're also doing what chat control and the OSA have done but to a much worse scale by basically forcing tech companies to backdoor encryption for all it's users even getting to the point where Encrypted messaging apps are having to leave the country because of these laws.
The Internet as we know it is about to enter a much darker age of government control and surveillance where everything requires ID and Biometric data. Just to access any service forcing KYC on everyone, and being unable to comply or fail to would have huge fines or blocks entirely.
This forum and others like it may come under attack sooner or later by either lobbyists or governments where we may be forced to go underground on networks like Tor to survive.
TL;DR: It's literally 1984 or whatever piece of dystopian fiction you'll say.
