Today is Elliot Rodger’s 35th birthday.

At least it would be if he didn’t kill himself.

I think it’s reasonable to do some whatiffery on this occasion. Starting with “What if he didn’t go on that rampage and kill himself?”

I think the best outcome would be him getting into Hollywood, and becoming a famous, rich actor. He would have his tall blonde Stacy, obscene amounts money, be worshipped by celebrityglazers. Etc etc etc. Basically, he would have everything he fantasized about in his manifesto.

Second best scenario is him becoming a successful writer. He was certainly talented. He would still be pretty rich and kinda famous, and probably have his ideal Stacy.

His parents probably could’ve nepoed him into either of those careers, had he tried. That said he would need initiative and talent for either of those.

He could have gotten a corporate job, and made a decent career and possibly gotten a girlfriend, although maybe not his ideal girl. I don’t know if he would be able to as a dropout though.

Speaking about that, I doubt he would be able to have finished college, as he just wasn’t built for it. He wasn’t very socially resilient, and tbh I don’t think he was very academically talented either.

SBCC Was just about the worst possible choice, and isla vista was the worst city for him. Maybe if he went to a different college in a different city, things could have gone better, but he already did 5 years of college, and he was almost 23, and he didn’t even have an associates degree, so I doubt he had the drive to finish college.

I could see him doing a masculine job like the army, police, fire, or a trade, but he would probably give up after the going got rough.

I think most likely, if he was alive today, he there would be one of two choices for him.

Work a good but not outstanding desk job, and make an upper middle class wage, and maybe date an MTB, or he could just keep living off his parents, remain a virgin, and keep trying to improve and get a girlfriend. Basically still be in the same spot he was back then

I know I laid out a lot of possibilities, but anything could have happened in these 12 years. 22 is still quite young, and he really could have done anything he wanted, became anything.

But he chose to give up.

I’m the same age he was before he died, it’s crazy to think he’d be middle aged in 5 years, since 5 years nowadays flies by like nothing.

Why did he give up? Because he lost hope. He didn’t rampage because of what society did to him, he rampaged because he had no hope things could get better. It was partly because women ignored him, but more so because he believed that women would always ignore him.

If he still had hope for a better future, he wouldn’t have done what he did, despite the injustices he faced. Maybe he still would be alive, still trying to ascend.

At the end the day, hope is the last thing you have left before you have nothing, so hold on to it as hard as you can

If you have hope, you will never give up, even if you have nothing else. Choose to believe that things can get better, even despite the numbers. What you believe is a choice, and one that doesn’t always have to reflect reality. Sometimes it’s better to be delusional than see reality

But to be fair, if he didn’t give up that day, he would have given up sooner or later. Maybe 2016, 2020, or even 2026. Maybe he would be planning or committing retaliation right now if he didn’t do it in 2014. I think most likely he couldn’t succeed in society. He had too many psychological issues. I’m fairly doubtful he could live a happy, fulfilling life, but I do think that he could still be alive

But unfortunately, we will never know for sure what would have happened to him if things had gone differently. We will always wonder what could’ve been.

In closing: never give up, and always have hope. There’s always a chance that you can make things better, even if it’s a small chance. You can always give up, and end it tomorrow. Today however, is not and will never be tomorrow. Make it through one more day at a time.

Maybe I he did what he did today, at 35, it would be understandable, but certainly not then, when it wasn’t completely over.

Tbf if he went ER in his mid thirties I wouldn’t hold it against him, I think it’d be reasonable. But not 22
