The Rapture will be on the last day

Jesus and Saint Paul seemed to think the end of the world was going to be about 2000 years ago.
The Millenium would have taken place by then had the Jewish people accepted their Messiah. But they didn't, so the Chruch age came first.

As for Paul, yeah he didn't know and thought it could be back then. Jesus revealed many things to him but not the date of the rapture.

Also, bear in mind that when people in the bible talk about 2000 years ago as the "last days", they weren't wrong, because there are roughly 7000 years of human history according to the bible and back then, roughly 4000 had already passed, so they were indeed in the last (three) "days" (one day is a thousand years for God and a thousand years is one day - so the entire human history would be like a week to Him).

"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." Matthew 16:28

That suggests that Jesus (or whoever wrote his character) thought the end of the world would occur within the lifetime of his own followers. For me this like discussing the Iliad of Homer anyway I don't believe a word of it. Though there was some historical basis for the Siege of Troy but it doesn't mean Zeus was real, it's exactly the same thing.

Jesus's words and lessons were more focused on His fellow Jews ("I came for the lost sheep of the house of Israel", also, Jesus especifically said at one point not to go to gentiles but only to Jews, also told it to the Samaritan woman - the gospel was ordained to be preached to gentiles by Paul only after, in the book of Acts. The books focused on us, gentiles, are Romans through Filemon), so it's often tricky to understand what He says and means, especially context.

I did some research and that passage is actually fulfilled just two verses later, in:

Matthew 17

1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

Jesus needs to come back. The earth is hopeless.

None of this holds much weight to me either way as I don't believe Jesus existed. You would have to convince me of the absolute rock bottom basics before you can advance onto anything else.
