Its a made up story so that they feel confident in their own delusions. Even if their anecdotes are true, they probably hide a bunch of crucial details to further push their narrative. For example, I can tell you "I know a guy" who is 5 foot 7 and slays stacies but I am hiding the fact that this dude is Tom Cruise. You can "know" someone and not actually be friends with them or have any social connection with them.
