But what you're forgetting is that you're describing the living standards and situation on those in the outer party, which is where Winston, Julia, Syme and most of the other prominent character are: They have stable careers, enough to eat, free apartments and are just about kept above the poverty line. But the outer party only comprises ~13% of the population of Oceania.

The vast majority of the population of Oceania are part of the proletariat, who are described in the book to be living in extreme poverty, they work dangerous manual labour jobs, they live in run-down slums and lack access to basic necessities, the Party keeps them uneducated and poor so that they're unable to revolt and unaware that they're being oppressed. The Party keeps them in control by making them addicted to beer, porn and gambling. however unlike the outer party members, the proles have freedom of expression and won't be killed for disloyalty to the party because they aren't considered human, the book compares them to cattle.

So odds are, if you lived in 1984, you'd be a prole and even if you were part of the outer or inner party, your life would be fairly shit: you wouldn't be impoverished but you wouldn't have any freedom of thought, action, or expression, and you'd risk being killed for any deviance from having complete loyalty to the party, you wouldn't be able to enjoy sex like you said, the Party considers that to be a form of thoughtcrime, the Party should be your only source of pleasure.

I know this was a joke post but I felt like typing this anyway.
