Everything is same in both the pictures except the first character. Do characters change when you write top to bottom vs left to right?
the texts say "vertical writing is like this" and "horizontal writing is like this", weird choice for a demonstration tbh the first characters are "vertical" and "horizontal" respectively
Japanese characters have fixed stroke order and they don't change nor connect with surrounding characters (like Latin cursive or Arabic), so they can be written in any direction (but these two styles are the most popular: vertical is more traditional, horizontal is modern)
