Basically, Emmett was a black kid who hit on this white girl in a convenience store and her husband just unironically tracked him down and murdered him. The evidence was overwhelming but the guy still got away with it. Funny thing is, the case was also ground breaking in so far as the white guy who did it at least got arrested before the trial, whereas in many prior cases the charges would be dismissed outright. and of course during the trial they portrayed Emmett as this sexually aggressive rapist who didn't know his place, even though he was just a 14 year old kid making a PG-rated pass at a white girl
