Great physician, alchemist, natural philosopher and 'father of toxicology' was an ugly, small, woman-hating man who never married and even, as his student said, avoided company of women altogether.
Maybe he had some physical defect. He supposedly was bitter, angry and frustrated, was often drunk and had a very unpleasant personality.
However, this physically 'unfit' man was probably more useful than hordes of sex-havers with perfect bodies.
As an epitaph on his tomb says: "Here lies Philippus Theophrastus, Doctor of Medicine of great renown, whose art most wonderfully healed even the most terrible wounds, leprosy, podagra, dropsy and other seemingly incurable diseases; and who honoured himself by having all his possessions distributed among the poor".
