When we used to be kids, we were fed this idea that humanity is inherently a moral, virtuous, rational, honorable and civilized species that is in the road to true progress and utopia. That it is special compared to any other animal species. True, to some extect. We rank higher in terms of IQ and basically rule this Earth. But other than that. We aren't so different.
But some of you, especially the lurkers, may ask "Well isn't that true? Aren't there honest good people?". And I will say no. Or perhaps there are, but they are EXTREMELY rare. Most people play a character they invented in their heads in order to be able to survive the harsh conditions of soysciety. People outside of their comfortable caves have to go through whatever bullshit they face for the sake of resources. If they are themselves, nature will quickly select them. So in order to not face that fate, they have to invent a persona in their heads to help them going through this as easily as possible. Once that it is done, they revert back to their normal selves.
Now, the questions comes "how could we possibly know humanity if it isn't revealing itself in public spaces?". That is easy, just observe the internet. On the internet, you are mostly anonymous. You can give yourself whatever name, profile picture, etc and no one will know that it's YOU. So people, in order to be their authentic selves, will take this opportunity and log in on whatever platform or website. And from there, the humanity starts revealing its true self.
There you go, humanity is not some ubermensch-like species that we like to portray ourselves as. Most of humans are just sophisticated barbarians and the internet clearly shows that.
Some may cope that the internet isn't real life, but I ask you this, if you were able to hide your identity and there would be no consequences on what you say, wouldn't you also be 100% yourself as well? Meanwhile in real life actions have consequences and you will be remembered for whatever it is that you've done. So ironically, the internet is more real than real life itself. Think about it.
