Yesterday, I watched from my window as a gang of masked youths tried to steal a delivery man’s motorbike. He withdrew and called the police. Fortunately, the boys were unable to steal the bike, because dragging on its side across the street wasn’t going to work. But ask yourself: what if it were me that was attacked? In the UK it is illegal to own a gun which means in such a situation where the perpetrators have knives and possibly guns, it’s over for you.
This reality is apparent for those who live in an impoverished location, populated by thugs, drug dealers and rowdy youths. A big social issue which my area faces is anti-social behaviour. The residents have all received several letters regarding this, and people even complain at my work place about crowds of hooded boys smoking weed outside their door. A few months ago, a boy was stabbed, and earlier this month police apprehended a boy threatening to stab someone. As much as I want to rant, I’m trying my best to not turn this into a race thing. But I will say, in these cases, there is a certain demographic that never fails to rear its ugly head.
I was 16 at the time when I started college. Psychology class was on Tuesday. I remember waiting for the train when three boys approached me, asking for my headphones. I refused so they followed me on the train and antagonised me until deciding to beat the crap out of me for their own amusement. I think passengers already knew what was about to happen, so they all got off the train. Nobody helped me. What’s even funnier is that the boys went to my college and would tell their friends and would laugh at me.
To be honest, I don’t feel safe. I now see the importance of cultivating one’s physical strength, punching power and fighting skills. I recommend taking self-defence classes, boxing or MMA to at least give you a sense of confidence and security if you’re ever put in a fight or flight situation. It could save your life.
