This whole ID verification is something I've feared would happen for a very long time. I remember posting about it 20 years ago, and a lot of people thought it was a schizo theory. Now it's close to happening.
And the pro-id-verification side will always have a million excuses. "We need to verify you're not a bot" "We need to stop foreign interference" "We need this to prevent terrorism" but the main one they're using, because it's so effective is "we need to protect ThE CHiLdReN!!!!!!!!!!".
Once an argument is framed as "X policy = protecting children" that side has already won because by logical extension surely that must mean those who oppose X policy are AGAINST "PrOtEcTinG CHilDreN!". Clearly they don't care about "ThE ChiLdREn!" or even worse, maybe they want to harm them. Opponents of the policy will make arguments about "civil liberties" and "privacy" but in the eyes of the general public they look like selfish assholes, if not straight up predators.
So the general public will support this, as will lawmakers. The only hope against these type of policies are courts striking them down. There are some judges out there with common sense, but the problem is even judges aren't immune to public pressure. They might worry that ruling against a policy that's widely seen by the public as as "protecting children" could harm their reputation or "legacy". They know the media and social media would drag them through the coals, leading to them and their family constantly being threatened and harassed.
So ultimately you'll have an internet that will be effectively unusable unless you verify your ID. Without verifying your ID, the most you will be able to do is view "child friendly" content like Mr Beast videos, and features like being able to reply or comment will be disabled. So most people will bite the bullet and verify their ID even if they were against it.
Then there will be data breaches (which happen all the time)...and then everyone, especially employers, will be able to see everything you ever posted, viewed or liked on that site. A lot of people will lose their jobs and become unemployable because of this.
