Now me personally, I am not a communist, tbh my beliefs economically are more pragmatic, but that is another topic.
The focus on anti-communism in the west completely shattered the social foundation of America and Europe, and it wasn’t organic of course, it almost never is
The congress for cultural freedom was founded by the CIA in the 1950’s, and it promoted progressivist and democratic anti-communist authors in Europe, which was very effective until it got disbanded in the 60’s, which paved the way for more radical groups like the new left, which would forever make Europe even more progressive than the United States in comparison, they also promoted Abstract expressionism in art
This Congress lead to the intelligentsia left in the west to no longer be socialist or Marxist, but rather progressive liberalism, it also detached itself in terms of the Overton window from not just communism or socialism, but nationalism as a whole, a dangerous lasting influence on the European continent, this freedom from collectivism and less about traditional social values lead to the rise in consumerism and cultural fragmentation
A similar thing occured in the United States too, however it took longer to take off, the reason it was done in the United States was so it could make America’s image look better in the Cold War, the arbiter of freedom, but also the way the boomers behaved due to the disastrous nuclear family plan, which distanced many originally close family members, away from these people, specifically the extended family, which meant the school would have much more influence on their values (instead of knowledge) than their parents.
