I think it's fairly clear that modern Western society really likes gay and trans people, to the extent that they're treated far more kindly by the criminal justice system.

But it seems to be that being gay will only really protect the person if the accusation is somehow related to sex, sexual orientation or relationships.

Whereas if you're trans I think it applies to everything.

Just something I noticed.
