So for anyone who doesn't know, Gunther is a character who is infatuated with Rachel but never gets anywhere near romance with her. There is never any mention of any female character In friends showing any interest in Günther.
One of the show's ongoing jokes is Gunther's suffering. His suffering is not meant to be taken seriously. We are meant to care deeply about other characters but not at all about Gunther. His pain is a joke. His utter hopelessness is a joke. You are never meant to feel any sympathy for Gunther, while he watches the love of his life fall for a continuous stream of superior men.
I wonder, would it be such a warmly received joke if it was a woman? Say a fat spotty girl ran the coffee shop and was in love with Joey, and we continually see her being ignored and let down, and eventually discarded without a second thought. Would the audience be so willing to laugh at her broken self esteem?
What message is Gunther supposed to send? Because it seems a lot like the message is "only attractive guys matter". Gunther represents the average/ plain guy. And he's a joke.
