...Because in order to do so, we would actually have to exist to them in the first place. You simply cannot hate something that, to you, doesn't exist.
We think people hate us because we WISH people hated us. Because, in truth, we hate being irrelevant and absolutely invisible way more than we dislike being HATED.
So, as a result, we pick the lesser pain: Being hated.
Why is it the lesser pain, you ask?
Because being hated, unlike being completely ignored, makes us feel victimized and self-pitiful, feelings which stimulate us and make us feel better.
The feeling of VICTIMIZATION always feels good because IT PROTECTS YOUR EGO FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD. Being invisible and, in turn, getting no reaction from the outside world, DIRECTLY HARMS YOUR EGO BECAUSE NOT ONLY IT INVALIDATES YOUR EXISTENCE, IT MAKES YOU QUESTION WHETHER YOU EVEN EXIST TO THE WORLD AT ALL.
Feeling like a VICTIM detaches you from the RESPONSIBILITY of life (which I don't condone exists, your life is your genes), leading you to feel good inside about being hated.
We are biologically wired to seek MEANING and PURPOSE (since survival has been out of the question for a long time), meaning that we have to have an impact ON THE OUTSIDE WORLD. Conversely, our minds would much rather we have a NEGATIVE IMPACT (but, nonetheless, an impact) rather than NO IMPACT AT ALL. It's the reason we feel stimulated towards doing "evil", "painful" things to others, but immense fear or pain at the thought of rotting in loneliness and irrelevance.
