If we need to fully comprehend how the human brain works before creating an AGI, then yes it's not for tomorrow. We don't even fully understand the brain of a worm.

On the other hand, there's evidence that full understanding of something is not required to develop it. Airplanes were developed through tinkering and experimentation first, and understood later. Most effective drugs (such as paracetamol) were discovered by chance and understood later, or never understood.

There's evidence that we are currently achieving rapid progress in AI in the same way, without understanding how it all works. For instance, AI is literally creating itself in adversarial networks.
