TLDR, one summer I was rejected by a friend of mine, and chastised for it. I thought it was almost impossible to get rejected because I had never tried before

What led me down this road? Where did it begin? I think there are a lot of answers to that, but I would say a few incidents from when I was 14, and had just started high school. I was optimistic about everything, including dating. I thought that it was easy, and that people were single because they chose to be.

The summer before high school was the first time that I ever asked a girl out. I was I a friend group that had maybe eight people, half girls half guys. I had known them for a couple years, and I sometimes had lunch with them and occasionally hung out after school.

I was pretty close with one of the girls there, and unfortunately I mistook a close platonic friendship for something more. Early August, shortly before high school, we were all hanging out. I started a one on one conversation with about sportsball or music or whatever, and I mentioned the upcoming movie free guy.

She said that the trailer looked really good. So I decided to ask her if she would like to see it with me. “I didn’t know that we had planned that, which group chat did you send it in?”

I should’ve taken the hint but I was stupid. “No just me and you, I wanted to go on a date” because I just HAD to clarify.

She looked surprised, and was taken aback. It was like I did something wrong. After like ten seconds of stuttering, she said she would have to “check her calendar” which I knew was bs, because she was pretty smart and had a great memory.

Two days later I got an essay text about just being friends and whatnot. I won’t get in to it too much.

Later I talked to the most popular guy in the group, and asked him what he thought, and he took her side, and said I shouldn’t have asked her out because it “messed up the group dynamic” I think most people agreed with him on that.

But there’s nothing inherently wrong about asking out anyone.

Oh and of course my dad told me “just be confident and you’ll surely get her”. Blue pilled bullshit.

I still hung out with them, but less and less there definitely was still some lingering awkwardness. I fell out of touch with them when I was around 15.

After that I was a little bit confused. How could this happen? I thought you just had to be confident?

After that, I looked at dating advice from Chad on YouTube and talked to my dad, and came to the “realization” that it wasn’t guaranteed, it was closer to 50-50, a coin flip. Back to the blue pill I fell.

But soon enough, high school started, and I forgot about the whole thing… mostly.

but soon enough, in the first semester of high school, came another experience that made me question my beliefs

Your first rejection is always the worst. It also shows you the truth, a little bit
