Which platform? I heard of godot, unity, unreal... rpgmaker too...
There was some controversy with Unity a while back donno what it was about though.
I have always wanted to try gamedev I'm okay with code.

I use Godot cuz it's free, easy and fast. You could try other stuff if you prefer something.
