He should have ran them over afterwards. He wouldn't even have to turn the car around, just go in reverse. Think about it, he just had a knife to his neck. It's not like he had a gun or something. Even if he would have been worried about getting life in prison for killing them, he could have at least hit them with enough impact to only break bones, and then it's almost guaranteed that he doesn't get in legal trouble at all.
