I've been replaying 3d World after beating Land, and I'm surprised how much variety the game has. Nearly every single level in the 3D world is unique and interesting in some way. There's almost no filler and repetition. (At least so far. I'm on World 7.)
The world themes in 3d World don't matter since most levels tend to ignore them and opt to do their own thing, aesthetically. While some have criticized this, I'd argue it's good. It prevents 3d World from falling into the boring tropes the New Super Mario Bros series was suffering from at the time.
Speaking of New Super Mario Bros, I can't believe people argued that 3d World was turning 3d Mario into New Super Mario Bros. 3D World is just as creative as the Galaxy games and feels like a direct follow-up to those more so than it does any New Super Mario Bros game. They don't even feel like the same series.
My only real criticisms of Super Mario 3d World would be that the music gets repetitive and lacks the variety the Galaxy games have, and that the difficulty can be overly easy. (Although I'm less bothered by this than I was with 3D Land because there's so much creativity.)
Otherwise, this is a great Mario game, and sadly, it's probably the last great Mario game we'll ever see.
Anyone who argues that Odyssey is better needs to be lobotomized. 3D World is an excellent game with barely any filler that's actually FUN to complete. It fixed one of my biggest complaints with 3d land which was having you complete each level with both Mario and Luigi. In 3d World, all you have to do to complete the game and unlock the final levels is collect all the green stars and get golden flagpoles on every level. I'd argue this is the best any Mario has handled completion. Despite the Galaxy games being the best in the series, I still have horrible memories completing them. Odyssey is of course the most obnoxious to complete due to the sheer amount of filler. There's so much copy and pasted content throughout it. Even doing a single playthrough of Odyssey is maddening. Despite Odyssey being a much bigger game, 3D World has more original content.
