looks distribution isn't linear, in reality 8/10 and above are less than 5% of men.

We didn't get any specific confirmation of the exact ratio, actually.

While we're told exactly 240 of the 300 girls, we're told "less than 50" (which could be anywhere from 0 to 49)

Author does say "a couple guys" so if we take that literally (why not? nothing better to go on), that's a 2:240 or 1:120 ratio which is actually far worse than 5:95 which actually is a 1:19 ratio.

You're going to have to explain WTF you're trying to do with these quotients because I really don't understand it at all.

Also your basis is wrong because it was "less than fifty" (probably TWO) not fifty.

"less than" or "greater than" is what they tend to use to try to soften blows and lead us to wrong assumptions.
