If you are shopping in a mall and enter a sweatshop customers will come to you ask you if you work here

This hasn't happened to me, but it doesn't seem that bad.

If they look at you and they think you work at the store, they are at least acknowledging some crumbs of humanity. They think you are human enough to be capable of being hired and working.

I've been mistaken for a gypsy beggar a couple of times and it was crushingly humiliating...

Happened to me. Well actually he assumed it without even asking, even though I wasn't wearing anything close to the shop uniform. When I told him I wasn't working there, he thought I was joking. I ended up helping him a bit, and eventually told him I really wasn't an employee.

This happens if you are at your local shop where you know where everything is and thus move around quickly and decisively. Older folks do this.
