I feel like this is common. A friend of mine once found himself doing this without really knowing why.
Like... I guess it's a stress test? To see how much the person likes you.
It's a delicate balance because if you do it carefully it probably does provide some protection from relationships that have no future anyway. But if you push it too far then you repel people who genuinely did like you.
