Not trying to sound like a tough guy, but playing as a defenseless woman or some whiny, scared guy who is constantly chased by a monster is something only effeminate men without testosterone can enjoy. It’s weird, almost like self-inserting as a domestic violence victim. Why would a man want to put himself in a position of total weakness?

I remember playing Haunting Ground and other horror games like Outlast and Amnesia, and I couldn’t help feeling disgusted. The constant running and hiding in a closet is a bizarre kind of enjoyment that I can’t relate to.

I can understand survival horror games like Resident Evil where you can fight back, but not games where you're constantly running away like a pussy.

That is all.

True, I couldn't finish outlast. Not being able to fight back was so annoying and not enjoyable.

Only horror game I played like his was alien isolation back in 2015, but at least later in in that game, you could defend yourself with a flamethrower

I never really played any horror games tbh.
In Skyrim or in GTA, which I played, you can just go against an army of foes like a fucking chad.

I did play outlast, it was funny, but these kind of games are not meant to be replayed for me, they get boring after the first run

Welcome to the forum btw, hope you enjoy your stay here. :feelsLightsaber:

I despise hide and seek horror games. They bore me to death. I would rather watch grass grow dedsrs. I prefer RE sort of horror games. RE2remake is my favourite horror game of all time. Although i have not played many horror games i would admit.

I played it too and yeah, the female in Alien Isolation actually has different weapons you can use besides the flamethrower to deal with enemies. Outlast feels pretty emasculating by contrast, because you’re playing as a guy but he doesn’t defend himself at all.

Thanks. I’m sure I will.

I remember thinking that game was pretty good.

I even wore a alien isolation shirt during open day at college and i had my student id pic taken with that shirt on.

I LOVE that game and I would not say that she eas defensless.
It is just that eventually the alien learns that even the flamethrower can't hurt it enough.

Happened to me on Nightmare mode on PC, which was a walk in the park compared to console.
I've almost beaten it on Nightmare mode without dying once, man.
Died once because of the alien attacking me despite being toasted by my flamethrower.

Despite the slow controls I have also managed to beat in on Nightmare mode on the xbox one.

bonus points if it's female MC who gets raped on failure. Oh wait, that's supposed to be based

Horror games are the only games that make me feel something any more

I only like horror games where you fight back and theres a goal in mind instead of shitty endless running

this is why my favorite horror game is Cry of Fear, idgaf about criticisms that weapons make horror games not scary

Yeah I tend to prefer being armed.

My favourite horror game is FEAR 2 and you're carrying loads of weapons in that!

I remember people hating the HUD in FEAR 2 when it came out, especially the whole gimmick with the tacticool glasses. Looking back, that kind of complaint feels tiny compared to the garbage we deal with in games now.

Horror games would not exist without youtube

lol true!

I wasn't super keen on the mechs but I thought the hud in fear 2 was quite... stylised and suited the game. Then again I guess it was more sci-fi than fear 1? maybe some people found that off-putting.

We had lots of horror games before youtube though ^_^
Most would not have survived without soytubers screaming at every unexpected pixel

Call me a pussy, but this was me in Silent Hill 1. Sure, when I found the hammer I felt invincible for a while, but it lasted very little, I had to avoid combat at all costs in one instance and ran out of healing items, and almost couldn't defeat Cybil. So yeah, I gotta replay that bitch.

Avoiding combat because you’re low on health and ammo is not the same as a game where you literally can’t fight back. My thread was about games that force you into helplessness, not survival horror where you choose to save bullets.

First RE games were much more about running away and avoiding than fighting.

Idk, I just like playing as a survivor in Dead by Daylight. I get your point tho

Is there an actual game like that

oooh another jumpscare wow soo spooky saar really adrenaline shot i got teeeheeee i wonder whats behind that door lol :soy:

Hate those kind of games and they're clearly made to bait streamers reactions

There appears to be a large female fanbase for stalker horror games like Haunting Ground, Clock Tower etc. A lot of the YouTube reviews are by females as well. I assume it's because of their rape kink.

Horror games are not fun if you can’t fight back

Interesting take. It intuitively makes some sense, but I have a counter. Our ancestors were hunted by creatures that were stronger and faster than them and they didn't have technology like guns to protect them. I'm talking wolves, bears, lions, other humans. I think that horror games bring back ancestral memories of guarding the tribe at night, where predatory animals and enemy tribes prowled around the peripherary.
Why would a man want to put himself in a position of total weakness?
Our ancestors didn't have a choice. Weakness is part of our nature. Technology has given us the illusion of strength.

Someone has to die in a war. Someone has to be eaten by the predator. For our ancestors, I imagine a horror game would make them think of being chased 10 to 1 by an enemy tribe, or 1 on 1 by a bear that wants to eat them. I think classifying these experiences as
something only effeminate men without testosterone can enjoy
misses the point. It's not about enjoying them, but about being human. For the same reasons, people enjoy shooter games. Not because they "enjoy killing," as a soyboy would accuse them, but because it's about being human. Being hunted and being the hunter are deep in our blood. Trying to have the one without the other misses the point. They're both essential.

I like to play as a weaker character that can fight back, it's a kind of cope for me.

Most horror games are boring walking simulators. They generally dont have any replayability or good gameplay. After playing through the game once, its usually not fun to do it again.

I swear Alien Isolation was different

Early humans weren’t passive prey though. They used primitive technology like spears, rocks, traps, fire, whatever tools they could improvise. Even when physically outmatched, they fought back.

I’m not against horror. I just don’t vibe with games like Outlast where the whole loop is hiding and running with no way to respond. That kind of total helplessness just feels emasculating to me.

In something like Alien: Isolation, you’re still vulnerable, but you have tools. Limited ammo. Scarcity. Risk management. You’re pressured, not helpless.

Any game where you just have to run and hide is gay.
