Yesterday I tried to get into Soulcalibur 6 again. I just couldn't do it. The single-player was mindlessly easy and filled with constant obnoxious dialogue/story text. One of the most boring experiences I've had in a fighting game. Out of desperation for a quality game, I decided to download the original Soulcalibur to play, and my god is it so much better!
Instead of having to read ludicrous amounts of story text, and listen to characters have bland conversations, the story is confined to a more simple and satisfying arcade mode where the only story takes place during the last boss. I was surprised by how much better the game looks and plays. Special attacks take skill so you can't just spam them whenever you want. Meanwhile, in 7, you can instantly release a special attack by pressing the second trigger button. It's so overpowered that it doesn't even need to recharge.
The story in Soulcalibur 1 increases in difficulty as it progresses. The AI is intelligent and constantly changes its strategy.
I'll never understand how Namco could mess up such a simple formula. All they had to do in Soulcalibur 6 was limit the story to the arcade and allow you to beat the arcade with any character you wanted. It's no wonder Soulcalibur is dead.
Overall, I'd say Soulcalibur 2, 3, and 4 are still better due to my preference for the stages and characters, but Soulcalibur 1 holds up fairly well and is far better than 6. As for 5, I think it's good, but I don't like the characters as much.
