The US offensive into British Canada, known by the codename "War Plan Red," was one of the most defining moments of the First Great War & Fourth "Anglo-American War." The Yankees streamed across the Canadian border due to their sheer superior strength in numbers, yet met much more stiff Canadian & British resistance than what was anticipated. Initially, the US General-Staff predicted the outright conquest of Canada upon the outbreak of war in 1914, which they then hoped would allow them to focus full efforts on the Confederates & Mexicans down-south, but this was halted due to many reasons. The terrain heavily favored the defenders, which when combined with the harshness of Canadian winters left the advancing US forces -"Army of New England" & "Army of the Great Lakes"- stalemated. To make matters worse, the Canadians had a scorched earth tactic of destroying any & all infrastructure after retreating, which resulted in the joint Canadian-British defenders having an intact supply-line which the Yankees lacked for the entirety of the war.
The painting above depicts the brutality of the US or "Yankee" invasion of Canada. It was commissioned by the US Army a good few years after the First Great War to honor all those who died in the invasion & conquest of Canada, and was painted by renowned Austro-German artist Adolf Hitler, who spoke of his admiration of Yankee military strategy -particularly that of General George Armstrong Custer & Colonel Irving Morrell- and their bravery in the Great War, which he likened to that of the Germanic Warrior Spirit.
In the painting above, you can clearly see the German influence on the US uniforms, with the jackboots & helmets -known as "Kraut Hats" colloquially by the Yankee "doughboys" or infantry- being more or less direct copies of the German design. Their Green-Grey or "fieldgreen" uniforms also served in stark contrast to the khaki shades used by British-Canadian & Confederate "Johnny Rebel" forces.
