How bad do you feel when you throw units in a RTS game to their deaths to obtain something that you want? That's how the ruling elite of nations view their soldiers.
Since the dawn of history, soldiers have been nothing more than glorified thugs killing for the government for the benefit of the ruling elite. It's only recently that the elite figured out they could make their soldiers fight harder by brainwashing them with some bullshit about "glory" and "defending their nation/empire", when in reality they are just fighting for the benefit of the elite. The elites are the only group of people that benefit from war. Literally everybody else loses from it. All wars are waged for money. All of them. Every. Single. One.
"But wait!" You say. "That isn't true! Some are waged for land, or religion, or ideas!" You say. But why do people want land? It's because the land contains something valuable. In other words, they want land because they want money. And as for religion, religion is just a scam the elite uses to horde more money. Look at the relationship between the lower and upper classes in virtually every single religion and you will see this. When an elite claims a war is about religion they are just using it as an excuse to take somebody else's shit. Look at Osama Bin Laden and how he lived for example; we were led to believe he was living on scraps in caves but then when he was finally killed it turned out he was actually living in luxury somewhere in Pakistan. Guy was basically a giant troll who bullshitted his followers into thinking that he was struggling for the cause so that he could attract more naive fools into joining his cause. This is how religion works, so wars waged in the name of religion aren't even really about religion at all as much as it is just used as a pretext. Ditto for ideas. Democracy and freedom? The elite just wants new lands to "colonize" with their big corporations. Socialism? The party elite just wants to destroy it's enemies so that it isn't undermined. Fascism? The state just wants more power so that it can turn its people into slaves. It's all bullshit.
But what about the american revolutionary war or civil war? Same thing. It was all about money. And while I will admit that fighting for the independence of your own nation is somewhat more worth dying for, you will still probably be oppressed by future ruling classes anyway. And then there is also the fact that many nations won't even exist in the future so the "immortality" you obtain by dying for it is bullshit anyway.
