Something I've been doing that's been helping me with basically the same problem you've outlined here: Go to a busy store and pick up some items to buy, get at (or in this case near) the end of the checkout line and intentionally stand away from everyone else but not too far ,and when someone walks up to get in line themselves, time it just right and take your rightful place before them without being a punk about it and say nothing. Simple and surprisingly effective. Gives off a vibe of mutual respect every time.

I explained how it helps already. It puts you on an level playing field so to speak. It's a small step in the right direction. Start with that principle and apply it more broadly in time.
