Slavcels, is it true that where you're from you care about New Year's/Eve more than Christmas?

Red Square. Look at those Christmas trees. Except no, they're not Christmas trees. They're New Year Trees. That's what other slavs tell me. But is it true?

If so, now is the most wonderful time of the year. The end of it.

Ew, looks horribly tacky and overdone

Yes, it is true.

Orthodox Christian churches in Eastern Europe still use the old Julian calendar, so they celebrate Christmas on January 7th.

Plus the commies wanted to get rid of Christian-related celebrations, so their propaganda put more emphasis on New Year's Day, to compensate for the signficance of Christmas.

So this awkward phenomenon is the legacy of the communist dictatorship and church calendars remaining the same, unlike mainstream Western calendars that switched to Gregorian.

During communist times when Christianity was suppressed the New Year was the only holiday.

It still remained as a day you base the whole Christmas aesthetics around with consuming, fireworks and present giving while Christmas Eve and Christmas are taken with a more serious note where you go to Church and have formal dinner.
