The entire scenario implies you're forced to pick between a bear and a man and doesn't depend on you randomly encountering one of them. What the hell is his point? How often bear attacks happen doesn't matter as much as how high the chances of an average bear mauling you are. Since the scenario assumes a woman is spending extended time with a wild animal a more fitting report to use as a base for extrapolation would be how often circus trainers get hurt by bears.
