You need to send out applications, get some job offers if possible. Then switch jobs if you get a higher pay. Asking for a raise is good but it has to be done right, sometimes when you get a counter offer or a raise, your kind of on borrowed time at that job anyway.

Will it benefit you to learn what that coworker did? If it will give you skills to look for a higher paying job afterwards, it might be worth it to just go through with it then leave afterwards.

If that coworker is performing tasks that would earn higher pay, it’s not fair to you if you’re not getting a raise or promotion. At first I thought that person who’d be training you was preparing you to take the coworker’s role permanently. But use it to your advantage if you can.
