There is a strange quasi worship of many animals and more specifically, dogs, within US culture. Most people take it as a innocent desire to add some life into there domestic existences. I however believe that any notion of innocent intent is woefully ignorant.
I am unsure of the more historical contexts, but I woudnt be surprised if the modern pet worship which exists in the US is somewhat of a modern cultural anomoly. So many people in the US have dogs. Many essentially treat there pets like children, like little humans of inferior intelligence. They also hold there pets to such a high regard. They protect their aniamsl as if they were their own kin. It honestly makes me cringe when I see a person engage ina full conversation with a dog, although I cant say im not guilty of this however. Furthernore, people take extreme pride in how they treat their pets, and believe it be a personal attack if you question any of their motives or actions.
Dogs however arent some creature of divine or spiritual value, at least not to the majority of dog owners. It really is a strange cultural phenomena of perhaps an arbitrary origin.
Why do we treat dogs like humans in America?
To my mind the answer is very simple. Its simply a dispalcement of our needs to socialize and connect with other humans. Americans today are likely on average the most socially isolated, least fertile, and touch deprived generation in the countries history. You can pet and hug your dog. You can say whatever you want and the dog is there to lsiten. You can take the dog with you on walks or other adventures. You can look your dog in the eye and expereicne the social interations given from another living breathing thing. You can raise a dog as your own, almost like a human child.
Really, everything that dog ownership has to offer is a direct reflection of what many Americans so sadly lack in their lives. Dogs however, are always going to be a lesser form of true human interaction. Dogs are to family, as porn is to relationships with girls.
