Something I noticed about the Russian army is when they actually show up and fight, they are fine. Where they have problems is when they cheap out/have bad organization on preparation. Thing is the Russian army was like other armies who have been at peace for a long while.. they become dysfunctional. And the only way to make them functional is to actually be in a war and have the will to force them to make changes. The needed changes become apparent in the fighting. One of the big benefits of the war for Russia, is that the war itself forces the Russian army to get good.

Russia has been scaling up their military contractors. There are all sorts of military suppliers in war that are private contractors. You want construction companies to come in with tons of construction workers and build you top tier fortifications, layers of defensive lines/proper trenches, sand bags, concrete structures even in the trenches, tunnels, etc. Looking at the Russian soldiers they also have good military kit. Like the body armor, helmets, ammo belts, warm weather gloves and clothing and boots, etc.

Are you financially invested in this war?

There are reasons why they're defending well:

1. Lots of Russian air strikes have destroyed ammo depots and weapons systems.
2. AFU took huge losses of experienced soldiers as well as new recruits trying to defend Bakhmut.
3. Russia had a lot of time to build trench networks and mined areas which are now destroying a lot of advancing Ukrainian tanks.

Not to mention minefields funneling the remaining formations into pre determined artillery kill zones and co-ordinated arty which can even destroy tanks and IFVs without wasting much time and ammo in preperatory fire

The airstrikes are effective. I think they have these big planes that go up high and then launch guided glide missiles which probably can go like 100km+ in.

And the Ukrainian air defense systems can't intercept these guided bombs which create massive craters!
